
The Belgian violist Sander Geerts was born in 1981 and started playing the viola at the age of eight. In 1999, he won the first prize at the Axion Classics Competition. Afterwards, he studied at the Antwerp Conservatorium with Leo De Neve and later on, he specialized with famous players such as Michael Kugel, Ervin Schiffer, Bruno Giuranna, Nobuko Imai, Hartmut Rohde and Yuri Bashmet.
In 2006 he was prize winner at the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition in the UK. Often, he plays solo with various ensembles and orchestras such as the Hermes Ensemble and the Royal Flemish Philharmonic, and he recently joined the Kryptos Quartet.
From 2008 on, he is the principal viola in the Royal Flemish Philharmonic.
In March 2011 he won grand prix at the international competition of young performers (chamber ensemble section) in Madeira, Portugal together with pianist Yasuko Takahashi.
In September 2011 he was finalist at the 18th International Johannes Brahms Competition in Pörtschach,Austria in the chambermusic section together with pianist Yasuko Takahashi as Duo Agineko.
